Yeah it’s as good as everyone says it is. It’s like the perfect marriage between the structure and flow of Mario Galaxy and the super cool abilities of Mario Odyssey.
The best thing about this game is that it is just simple, pure fun. I mean I had a smile on my face all the way through and only got frustrated a few times lol, and it was always on the X, O, square, triangle levels. But even then those levels are the perfect length that I never got to the point where I was just not having fun. It was always a fun challenge and never one of those levels where you mess up once and get sent back 10 minutes. And that really is the crux of what makes the game so fun for me. It doesn’t try to bull crap you or throw some randomly hard level out of the blue; it focuses on fun, be that in admittedly simple platforming or with unique abilities. Some say this game is too easy and I 100% understand that, but idk it is perfect for me. I’ve never cared for overly difficult or frustrating games, so just having a game I can just play in and not have to push myself much is just pure bliss. It’d be different if it was just easy with not much else going for it but like I said, this game is fun through and through.
I know all of that is very subjective, and one very subjective thing that I love about the game is the collectibles. It does not have you do insanely difficult, out of the blue missions or trophies. It lays everything out very understandably and doesn’t hide anything. And especially, it does give you an ungodly amount of crap to do. It is exactly what I loved about collecting in Tinykin and why don’t care at all to collect for something like Mario Odyssey. I mean who wants to freaking collect 800 or something moons in Mario Odyssey?? Having max 318 bots and on average like 8 a level is perfect. It makes every bot feel special, and same with the puzzle pieces. You actively want to find these bots. Another point is, the game actively uses these collectibles in fun ways. Sure they do block areas off based on bit numbers, but that’s not the only thing the bots do. They feel like part of your family in the game, helping you explore the hub, dancing all the time, and having super fun animations. It’s awesome collecting them. And even the coins and puzzle pieces are fun to collect since they go to super fun and cool cosmetics instead of just unlocking a lock or giving you a 1 up (which I hate lives in games so also a plus to this game).
And for all of the PlayStation stuff: I ate all that up. It actively makes me want to go and play like all of the games that were referenced. I think the original Ratchet and Clank may be up to bat next actually (maybe). I do agree that some bots were definitely missing (Square Enix characters seriously square please allow at least Sora], the Greek God of War stuff, and Sweet Tooth. I’m guessing that the latter two were out of Asobi’s control since they both come from a guy who doesn’t like Sony, but it really is stupid that they’re missing like come on). At the same time, however, the representation we got here is more than anyone could have asked for and having characters that aren’t Sony properties but at important to the PlayStation goes a long way (shoutout to Metal Gear Solid)
So yeah look this is very, very subjective. I think this game is perfect. Notably, I think the lack of difficulty makes this game better but I understand that’s arguable. In any regard, this is easily one of my new favorite games and possibly my favorite platformer??? I’ll decide in a minute. Edit: oh yeah it’s my favorite
