3.5/5 ★ – Arkaron's review of FINAL FANTASY III.
Beat at 10h, lvl 64. Pixel Remaster, all boosts up.
Hm. This one felt tedious. It had great elements: the world and story felt good, even though I feel its a step back from FF2. I liked the airships, world exploration, the job system and variety of scenery. The boosts and auto battle still felt great for people like me who dont enjoy round based battles too much.
But it all started to feel tedious when you had to jump with your ship through mazes, when you are forced into certain jobs to progress and you do not have any equipment for those (fuck those mini passages, even if the idea is really neat) and ESPECIALLY when you have to go through that final dungeon. What a slog. But i suppose for people who don't boost like me it might be an enjoyable final gauntlet? So I suppose I give that a pass. Still the whole game felt more like a sequel to FF1 than to FF2. It feels like they didnt progress forwards at all this time and reverted all changes they made to FF2. The story is also now the exact same one as FF1, so absolutely no innovation there.
I did enjoy the many hidden items, paths and optionsl content. Finally exploring is really rewarded. Having your own ship with a bed also felt really nice. The traversal and convenience progression in these games is really satisfying (mostly). But the really interesting advancement is the job system. That felt much better than FF1 or 2. I'm excited to see if they keep that in the sequels.
