4.5/5 ★ – Aron_Blue's review of A Plague Tale: Innocence.

This game exceeded my expectations. In the first hours of gameplay, I thought I wasn't gonna like it due to thinking it would be another The Last of Us wanna-be but after progressing more through the story, I couldn't be more happy to be wrong. This is one of the best games I have played in a while and it instantly became one of my favorite games of all time. Where do I even start? The characters were amazing. The chemistry between Amicia and her brother, Hugo, was soo natural and realistic. This is probably the best portrayal of a sibling relationship I have seen in a video game since the Drake brothers from Uncharted 4. The pacing was also soo good, I barely encountered any moments that dragged the story down and the gameplay felt almost original. Instead of using any typical melee weapons, you use sort of of a slingshot. Not a slingshot like the one from Bully, it's more like a string attached with a small rock, you spin it and throw it towards an enemy's head. Very neat combat. I can't stand myself for being so late to the party. I am also very surprised to learn that this was made by the same developers behind the Ratatouille PS2 game back in 2007, one of my favorite games from childhood. Isn't it weirdly amazing that they first made a game about rats feeding people and a decade later, they made one about people feeding rats? Coming full circle, I see. Speaking of rats, they serve as an enemy type in the story and I thought they would so boring to deal with but they did something unique with them and nailed it in the end. Now, is this game perfect? No, there are definitely some parts that almost made me rage quit. Especially in the last chapter and the final boss. They went full on action in this level and the combat in this game didn't seem like it was made for over-the-top action sequences. It also didn't help the fact that dying in some certain scenes kind of broke the immersion. The gameplay should have been more polished. Overall, I love this game and I would definitely recommend it to everyone who loves story-driven games, especially The Last of Us.
