4.5/5 ★ – Artagah's review of Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea.
This was my first time playing the DLC and it was SOOOO GOOD! I specifically played it right after playing BioShock 1 and Infinite all in a row and I feel like that absolutely maximized the impact of this release.
Both of the episodes take place in Rapture right before the collapse where the events of BioShock 1 pick up. While the first episode is more of a classic BioShock adventure, albeit with way more limited stockpiles of ammo than usual, the second episode is a very unique, fresh stealth-based gameplay experience where you play as Elisabeth. The narrative here takes the cake. It both gives more context and closure to the characters we met in Infinite, while at the same time greatly expanding on the lore of BioShock 1, revisiting all the old faces you've missed and telling you exactly what happened right before the first game began and what led to the collapse of Rapture.
The only reason I'm not giving this release full 5 stars is how confusing it is that this adventure happened at all, specifically after how Infinite had concluded. I don't want to go into spoilers, but it just doesn't make any sense for any of the Infinite characters to even exist here, yet they do with no explanation given, simply for the sake of the expansion's existence.
Regardless of the narrative confusion as to how the expansion story happened, I'm glad that it did, this release nailed the emotional beats, pulled on all the right nostalgic heartstrings and showed us rapture in a light we've never seen before, and for that I am so very grateful.
