4.5/5 ★ – Ataliano's review of Sea of Thieves.
Despite having a very poor score in Metacritic, I found Sea of Thieves to be one of the best co-op experiences you can find out there. Fresh, original, and a game where each session becomes a totally different experience.
In Sea of Thieves everyone is a pirate, and everyone is equal, you won't win more strenght, power nor any other perk by playing and completing goals and that's a key point in this game, it's all about strategy, not about how long you've been playing.
While you can do some missions for some NPC's which will increase your level in a specific faction, giving you better missions over time and unlocking some items, none of this progress will impact your player ability or performance, which is great as a newbie might be as powerful as a veteran, if he's a good at developing strategies.
This game though is mean to be played with friends. While you can play SoT alone the experience is far away from what you get with some mates over a party chat.
The game had lack of content when it released but Rare has continued to give support and updates and nowadays it's a must play for anyone who might enjoy this kind of games. Easy to play and enjoy but hard to master and become a really good player.
While most missions are essentially the same and might seem repetitive, the key of this game is not the mission you're going to do, but what will happen in the journey, finding unexpected enemies, treasures, captains or even being attacked by the Kraken or a Megalodon. Quite often you would fire it up to complete a mission but you'll end up on a several hours session doing anything but the mission and still enjoying an awesome experience.
Give it a try and most probably you won't regret, especially if you can play with a crew of 2+ players (up to 4).
