3.5/5 ★ – AvatarAang's review of Pizza Tower.

This game kind of floats between a 7 and an 8. It isn't quite one or the other! I played this game after playing through Wario Land 1-4 last year. You can tell that this is a spiritual successor to Wario Land 4, and I think it is an improvement in most ways! What struck me the most is the soundtrack, but it is a little inconsistent. Some songs are kind of just there, but others are great. I really was wowed by the second boss fight theme, and a couple of level songs in the second and third worlds. That got me hooked on the soundtrack and I thought I was in for a real treat, but I found that nothing grabbed me after that. This game has a lot of personality and it really succeeds at capturing that 90's Nickelodeon vibe. Peppino's character emotes were particularly great. I loved seeing what made him freak out! I also loved when enemies would panic over seeing Peppino barreling toward them. The bosses slink around the tower and do drugs when you beat them, which I thought was a funny touch. A couple levels were memorable with fun gimmicks, particularly around the middle of the game. But I wasn't grabbed by anything in the fourth or fifth worlds. I think this is the area where the game is weaker than Wario Land 4 specifically. WL4 had something fun and new to offer in every level. Many levels in Pizza Tower feel kind of same-y. The movement is a mixed bag. Peppino's moveset is great and fun to use. There is an unlockable character after you beat the game that controlled even better. But I was crashing into walls or bonking into ceilings very frequently, and towards the end of the game that started to get annoying. The issue I think is that although you can run up walls, you only do so if you jump into them. So you can be bombing through an area and then crash to a complete stop because you ran into a wall rather than jumping into it. But likewise, there were parts where you are jumping through the air and do not want to run up whatever you crash into. It was not game breaking or a major issue in any way, but it is the main thing that makes me hesitate to give the game an 8. I also was completely confused by the story. It felt like there should have been a manual to explain it, but I don't think there was. BUT, this is a zany and fun time! I'm glad to have played it and I would recommend it to any fan of the Wario games. It definitely feels like the ultimate Wario Land game in all the right ways!
