3.5/5 ★ – AzulAzuril's review of Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD.
KH Dream Drop (or DDD) is a bridge game that shows the story after KH2 and prior to KH3. There are some features to like about this title: the inclusion of Riku as a playable character, the addition of the flowmotion system for enhanced movement abilities, and the return of the command system from KH BBS. I still enjoy KH DDD and I’ve completed it 100% but it’s definitely a bit rougher than some of the other games. The game has an odd selection of worlds, with some standouts, but some weird choices (particularly the Three Musketeers world). The game is probably the first in the KH series to jump the shark story wise, with the inclusion of time travel as a major plot point. The game also doesn’t have typical party members and instead features Dream Eaters, which are cute little critter companions. These are fine, but their leveling and ability system is quite obtuse, and without a guide, it’s not clear how to unlock certain abilities (some of which are necessary for endgame boss fights). The combat in the game is a little strange, with enemies hardly recoiling from your hits. Overall, this is a fine game, but it’s definitely not the best that the KH series has to offer.
