3.5/5 ★ – AzulAzuril's review of Pajama Sam 2: Thunder and Lightning Aren't so Frightening.
I had significantly less memories and nostalgia attached to Pajama Sam 2 than either the first or third entry in the series, so it was interesting to replay this game with a critical eye. I do like the setup for the game quite a bit, as having Sam confront another typical childhood fear like thunderstorms makes for a fun premise. I think the theming for World Wide Weather is a little less consistent than the Land of Darkness from the first game, as the game seems to be going for a weather theme, but it ends up having more of a corporate/business theme. Even the items you must find are machine parts for the weather making machines so the game feels much more industrial than a theme about weather would make you believe. This corporate theme does create some good jokes (I’m a particular fan of the “chairman of the board”) but Sam feels a little out of place in a business setting. The developers did get creative with map design though, making for an interconnected world with lots of rooms that weave in and out of each other.
Plot wise, I really enjoy that Thunder and Lightning are immediately introduced at the beginning of the game and serve as supportive allies throughout the game. I thought the ending of the game felt a bit abrupt and I was not a fan of Mother Nature’s design/voice, I thought the humor with her just didn’t land. I do really like some of the weather machines, particularly the Y Pipe and Velocimomometer. While playing, I did get a little frustrated as I encountered some glitches and freezes that forced me to power off my computer. I don’t know if these issues were specific to this game or my computer, but I had no issues with any other Humongous Entertainment game I played through. At the end of the day, I still had fun playing this game, but I do think Pajama Sam 1 is still the superior title.
