4.5/5 ★ – AzulAzuril's review of Pajama Sam In: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside.

I am a HUGE fan of Humongous Entertainment games, as these were some of the first video games that I ever played. If I were to recommend a single game to anyone that had never played one of these point and click adventures before, I would probably recommend Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It’s Dark Outside. I find this game to be creative, funny, and engrossing in a way that elevates it even above other games made by this developer. Pajama Sam has you playing as a young boy, Sam, who’s afraid of “Darkness,” whom he treats as an anthropomorphized entity. When going to bed, Sam decides to turn into his superhero alter-ego “Pajama Sam” by donning his flashlight, mask, and lunchbox to take on his foe, but when he goes into his closet, Sam stumbles and finds himself falling into a foreign world, “The Land of Darkness.” This Land is filled with strange creatures, and Sam needs to recover his lost items so he can defeat darkness. One of the things that Pajama Sam does so well is create a sense of atmosphere. The Land of Darkness is a dark, eerie world, and it’s filled with adventure and danger (yet never too dangerous for Sam!). Setting the game at night creates such a sense of mystery, and Darkness is a fun (and memorable!) antagonist once you get to confront him. The other characters throughout the land are wacky and memorable, and the dream-like craziness really works for a game set during nighttime. The game is filled with Humongous Entertainment trademarks. There’s so much humor and charm throughout the game, which results in a memorable experience. Clicking on background objects often results in funny animations or sound effects. The game isn’t difficult for adults, but as a kid, I got lost in this world and found it really challenging to get through, making my completion of the game feel like a real achievement. The lost items can also show up in multiple locations, so different playthroughs of the game actually feel distinct from each other. I adore Pajama Sam and his adventures, but this first outing is a truly top-notch experience. This is a great game for kids but it’s also a great game for fans of the point and click genre!
