3.5/5 ★ – AzulAzuril's review of PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure.
I got this spinoff game as a kid and really enjoyed it a lot. Having the ability to explore a 3D environment as a Pokémon is so much fun, and I love the premise of a theme park run by Pokémon, for Pokémon. The animations and voice work throughout this game are super cute, and it makes for a delightful adventure. The story in this one is pretty basic, it’s a classic “friendship is magical” kind of game, but exploring the environments and playing the games make for a fun time. The game is also definitely aimed at a younger audience, as most of the minigames and attractions are easy to clear, and I found them to be that way even as a kid. There are a couple more difficult chases and battles, but once you upgrade Pikachu they aren’t much of a challenge. The game also has a weird control scheme, as you play with the Wii Remote held sideways, which makes movements locked to four directions and some buttons more difficult to press. There’s also no multiplayer on some of the attractions, even though they really should have some, and there’s a reliance on Wii motion controls for many of the games too. Even with these flaws, I still look fondly on this game, as there’s not much else in the Pokémon franchise that plays like it.
