3/5 ★ – AzulAzuril's review of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.
I played the first Uncharted for the first time after getting it for free on the PlayStation Store. I had played the entire Tomb Raider trilogy previously, so I was excited for the opportunity to play through the Uncharted trilogy. I ended up a little disappointed from the first game on a gameplay level, but invested on a character and story level.
I found the gameplay for this first title to be pretty rough around the edges. Nathan Drake moves a little weirdly, and the aiming/shooting just feels a little off sometimes. The lack of stealth options really hurts this game, and you often snap to cover in weird ways that don’t always feel natural. I personally almost felt like it was a bit of a slog to get through this title, because of how dated the controls felt.
Uncharted pulled me in though through its great cast of characters. Nathan Drake is an immediately likeable protagonist, and his smarmy attitude makes him feel like a modern day Indiana Jones. His relationship with Sully and Elena is really fun to watch, and those two are both fun and loveable characters to. This is simply a cast of characters in a fun setting, and it’s immediately clear how this game launched a series, even if it needed a bit more polish. I don’t have much desire to replay this first game, but I sincerely appreciate how it introduced these characters and added a great new franchise to the gaming landscape.
