3.5/5 ★ – Blaitmun's review of Manhunt 2.
Inferior to the original Manhunt in terms of survival horror. I greatly prefer how the original really has the feeling of playing an 80s slasher movie, 2 on the other hand is more like an psychological thriller that is essentially Fight Club, Memento etc. That being said the presentation isn't bad, but whilst there are more cutscenes, the story isn't that figured out in my opinion, and becoming a bit stiff every now and then.
Mechanic-wise it is semi improved, there are environmental, gun and "death from above" executions added, the camera is sort of better, the targeting ui is bigger and some of the levels can be more open. A huge issue however is the Ai, especially in smaller areas, i can't even count how many times they've ran backwards.
There's even more gunplay here than the original and it, like a lot of the game is way too easy. I rarely struggled here in comparison to the original (though i played this on PC so that might be why). Some sections become a bit of a slog and without as strong an atmosphere as the original just makes it too unintresting. However that isn't to say that there aren't some fine setpieces that certainly gives the original game a run for it's money, the first three levels for instance are quite exemplary of how the game should have set out in level design/tone, those are mostly the areas which survival horror is ramped up.
Speaking of ramped up. Manhunt 2's biggest claim to fame ia obviously the executions. They are gruesome and atleast most of the time surpass the original in gore. However i once again want to point out that the original makes the brutality feel more disturbing since enviroments are darker and you are slower, which makes killing more tension-based. As always though, the sound design is absolutely horrific and just plain gross at times. I mean if you also think about what else they would have included it is still pretty disturbing and the visual effects do make it even more depraved and impulsive (Uncut or not).
So in conclusion, it is decent but not as good or as provocative as the first game was.
