4.5/5 ★ – Boulderman24's review of DOOM Eternal.
I played Doom 2016 near the first half of 2020 on the Switch, and it was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I’ve had this year. I just finished this one on my PS5, and I had a very enjoyable time as well. For some reason, I did seem to enjoy the 2016 game a bit more. Maybe it was the novelty of the experience at the time, or maybe it’s because I liked the darker tone the game had, but it really struck me and was addictive to play. This one just didn’t captivate me in quite the same way, though I still enjoyed it a lot overall.
The good: this game is fast paced shooting mayhem. It’s some of the most engrossing gameplay of any type of game out there. It has good levels designs that don’t get you too lost but still have some challenge in doing light puzzles and platforming. It has some semi entertaining story cut scenes. The final boss of the game is super epic and was really satisfying to defeat.
The less good: some encounters with hordes of enemies can seem to drag on in places. There are a few parts of combat I wasn’t huge on, like the having to beat the one enemy that was powering everyone else up. The fact that your melee attack doesn’t damage enemies was lame, I like closeup attacking.
I don’t play many FPS games, but Doom 64 was one of the first games I had on the N64 as a kid so this franchise has a place in my heart. I’m glad Doom is still thriving as a franchise. This was a lot of fun, but I still favor the 2016 game as a more tight experience.
