4/5 ★ – Bowen_Bozo's review of Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
One of the best 2D Mario games possibly EVER made. I personally wish to stay away from giving games a 5-star rating ... but this game was way too phenomenal to not throw the bone to ... if the multiplayer levels were actually optimised FOR MULTIPLAYER gameplay.
Genuinely I love everything about this game - the fact that there's a different Wonder gimmick for EVERY SINGLE LEVEL in the game is unreal to me and shows how much love Nintendo can put into a game when they really want to - but since the only time I played this game was in my most recent multiplayer play through with my girlfriend, I can't justify giving the game 5 stars due to that lack of cohesion in the multiplayer gameplay.
There's no split screen to the game, so the boundaries of the level are controlled by who the game deems the leader (usually whoever is closer to the objective, though I may be wrong on what dictates the leader) and the camera follows the leader.
If you're trying to catch up to the leader, you're going to be thrown around the screen A TON by the boundaries. Some of the challenges suffer severely due to this, and there were plenty of times where my GF and I were struggling with objectives in special stages because instead of dragging us to the hidden area - the person would just die because both people in the game didn't commit to jumping into what seemed to be a bottomless pit. Inversely, there were plenty of times where we DID commit to jumping into this bottomless pit - AND IT WAS A BOTTOMLESS PIT!
That aside - this was still some of the most fun I've ever had playing a video game, and I'd give the game a perfect score if the multiplayer problems weren't so glaring in a game that was partially sold on the fact that you could play online with up to four players ... and we had issues with two player local co-op.
A much smaller problem I had (and really doesn't affect the score at all because it's just me being an adult playing a game made for EVERYONE) was the flower. I found that guy very annoying and laughed so hard whenever he would suffer.
Overall though if you're looking for a great time with a modern 2-Dimensional Mario game ... Mario Wonder is the perfect choice for you! 4 stars from me on my first review here on GG - couldn't have gotten much better if you tried, Nintendo!
