4.5/5 ★ – Caljb03's review of Severed Steel.
What a game, what a game. I went into Severed Steel with some pretty low expectations, I hadn’t really seen much from it prior to launch so it completely flew under my radar. But boy do I wish it didn’t. Severed Steel plays almost like the opposite of Superheat. Instead of being a slow and methodical shooter, almost strategic in nature. Steel has you moving at a lightning-fast pace having to think on the spot as you adapt to ever-changing situations.
The game feels as if it was a spiritual successor to Titanfall 2’s movement in a way. You have plenty of ways to traverse such as wall runs, slides, and double jumps. However, the addition of somersaults allows you to pull off some damn electrifying moves. This, along with a wide range of weaponry and enemy types, leads you to have the time of your life as you zip around each tight arena taking down foes.
There isn’t much to say about it really. Its core gameplay loop is absolutely phenomenal which can make its external elements like the story feel pretty nonexistent. Which in this case, isn’t much of an issue. It understands what will keep you playing, and removing any downtime through exposition means you’ll be involved for longer. It’s easy to pick up and a real, real, REAL challenge to put down.
