0.5/5 ★ – CheapJelly's review of Sonic Lost World.
I guess Sega can fart out any slop, put the sonic logo on it and call it a day, when sonic games will sell no matter what.
This is no exception! There is a very clear lack of passion on display here. The writing is lazy and annoying, with characters that look like they were designed for a different game and then just thrown into this one! I’m not expecting Shakespeare from a sonic game, but I’d like them to at least try to give a shit!
I don’t know why sonic team insist on trying to ‘reinvent’ sonics level design and gameplay with each new game, they seem to be leaning more towards precision platforming here, not completely new to the franchise but certainly a heavier emphasis on display. And it sucks! Sonic is so clunky to control, with either no momentum at all or too much that launches you into the void. And frustrating level design, shamelessly ripped from Mario galaxy. Nothing wrong with getting some inspiration but this takes it a step too far, and does it poorly. If you’re going to rip ideas at least do it well.
There’s no continuity or context for how anything in the world relates to one another. Not in the level design, you just move from one disembodied floating rock to the next and not in the storyline, where the cutscenes just tends to happen whenever the devs could be bothered to put one in.
Its a shame, I do like sonic as a character more so than anything else, and there are sonic games that I do like. I just wish Sega would care a little bit more about their star mascot.
