4/5 ★ – Cheeeese's review of Ever17: The Out of Infinity.
I expected it to be really good based on how high it ranks in VNDB but man, all 4 routes were honestly nothing too too special. There's a couple cool ideas used like having two different protagonists, with one of them having amnesia and the other being a college student and stuff like questioning where and why 'you' exist.
A large chunk of the entire game is just spent with the gang spending time around LeMU eating sandwiches and playing kick the can with nothing interesting at all happening until the end of each route. Tsumugi and Sora's routes had some good bits but were generally pretty boring while You was kinda fun and Sara was a disappointment due to it being pretty short and her character taking a full 180 and becoming uninteresting after her big reveal.
The best part of the game however, is undoubtedly the final route that unlocked after the first 4 are completed. While the rest of the game was an alright experience, the final route goes absolutely insane with twists and turns and connects all the dots that were being left behind by all the other routes. The problem is that I took about 22 hours to finish the first 4 routes then another 8 or so to finish the final route. If the game was able to consistently be as good as the final act, perhaps it would've been more interesting but in the end, it's just an alright visual novel with a spectacular final act.
I should note that the lead writer is the same as the Zero Escape series and that he apparently reuses a lot of twists from this game throughout the series, so I would recommend playing those instead for a much more enjoyable experience.
