2/5 ★ – ChucklesBiscotti's review of Sniper Elite 4.
The rule is everything's more fun when you play it co-op. I will have to add an extra addendum to that and say it's more fun when you can shoot fascists in the testicles -- and drop U-boats on Hitler.
Sniper Elite is the younger sibling to Hitman or Dishonored. While the creativity never quite reaches a top tier level, it's an ultra violent game that finds some humor in the ultra violence. It's a shtick that also feels familiar to Hitman, but Sniper Elite also doesn't seem to know it's in on the joke beyond the violence like a Hitman does? (This is the only one I've played through to completion, so that could be a misread on my part.) If the developers are not in on the joke that's also fine, but the narrative doesn't ever feel weighty even with a gravel-voiced protagonist, bloodshed, and the stakes of, well, WWII.
On the gameplay front, there's plenty of creativity in terms of going loud or quiet, booby trapping bodies, shooting loads of nuts, and this is why you're playing the game -- not the narrative. The creativity is perhaps secondary at times to just the skill of hitting amazing sniper shots using wind and distance to plan your shots, which maybe leads to them not putting as much thought into other weapons beyond the guns or the objects to shoot in the environment itself to cause humorous chain reactions.
But really all that's mostly irrelevant. You play this with a friend and have a blast. Even if you barely need to play as a team to succeed most of the time, and your sniper rifle can solve essentially all your problems (which removes the need to test other things unless you want to get more style points), it's still fun to plan out synced up shots and figure out how to approach the various objectives because the maps absolutely have multiple attack routes.
Bottom line, I booted the game to shoot Nazis in the balls with a buddy, and it delivered that. It's bonus points that there was DLC where I also got to kill Hitler in various ways -- 10/10 would play again.
