4/5 ★ – ColeTrain's review of Resident Evil Code: Veronica X.
Before you ask no I'm not addicted to RE but maybe I'm just in denial , I'll let you decide that for yourself. So the story of this game puts you in the shoes of Claire Redfield again three months after RE2 . She infiltrates an Umbrella research facility in Paris still searching for Chris however during her search she gets found out and is captured by Umbrella's security forces who send her to a remote prison in a place called Rockfort Island. During Claire's imprisonment there's an outbreak of the T virus in the prison turning prisoners into zombies so a man named Rodrigo captain of the security force that captured her and imprisoned her there lets her go free Claire asks him why he's letting her go Rodrigo tells her
That it doesn't matter as she probably won't survive long anyway and says everything's finished. Claire then decides to leave the prison , find out exactly where she is and see if she can get in contact with Chris somehow.Time to talk gameplay now well it's back to the more traditional style of gameplay of RE with the tank controls returning from the first game so you'll have to get readjusted to that again. However it's a bit different from RE remake in that you get into position with right trigger and then shoot with X this definitely took some time for me to get used to.Time to talk about the weapons so there's obviously your standard pistol which kinda sucks at first but you can eventually find parts that allow you to upgrade it which allows you to fire it in bursts rather than just a single shot this makes it much stronger and a more viable weapon later on. There's also the shotgun which is a pretty solid gun it'll take care of just about everything you'll run into. The Bow Gun which is like a Crossbow the regular arrows of which you find plenty for it are pretty garbage it can take I think about 13- 15 shots to kill even regular zombies. There's one redeeming quality of it however and that's if you find bowgun powder and you mix it with the regular arrows you can create explosive arrows. These are pretty awesome as they'll kill most enemies in one shot it's worth saving these for some of the tougher enemies you'll come across though. Somethiing new to Code Veronica are the Dual SMG'S these guns are good at filling zombies full of lead in a hurry. There's also the knife for really desperate situations where you have no ammo . that's just to name a few of the weapons. There's still puzzles in this game of course and one I found interesting for example is in the prison there's a section where you need to put an eagle shaped object into a gate in order to open it so you have to go to a desk in one of the buildings around the prison open a drawer and take the object however there's a metal detector that won't allow you to go through with it so you have to find the 3d duplicator which is like a 3d printer and then put the eagle into it but it needs material to use in order to make the replica so you then have to find a metal case in the back of a truck and unlock it you'll then find that the case was holding a special alloy that can't be detected by metal detectors. You then have to take that through the metal detector put it in the duplicator and put in the eagle then use the duplicator to make a replica of it then take that replica through the metal detector and place the replica eagle object in the indentation where it's supposed to go then you will be able to open the gate and go through to the next section you need to get to. Somethiing else interesting and different is that the camera is not fixed and pans along with you as you go from area to area but the positioning of it is somewhat similar to RE Remake still . Now the good and the bad I liked the setting of Rockfort Island it was interesting going to all new location I hadn't seen before. I liked the storyline I found it very interesting. I really liked Claire a lot she's such a great character really well done such a kind and sweet person and willing to help others in need I liked her progression in this game as well she's more experienced but not so much to a ridiculous degree. I liked the later parts that gave some Transylvania vibes kind of a nod to dracula type stuff especially as you progress there's some other great locations as well. I loved the dual weilding so much that made me just say "woah !" I was so surprised by it. I liked that zombies were a bit less stressful to manage, no Crimson Head's to deal with thank god, no burning of corpses needing to be done . You also don't need to go for headshots to kill zombies you just need to shoot them until a pool of blood appears under them and they will be permanently dead , it just felt nice not to have to be super accurate to permanently kill a zombie for a change. On to the bad this game really doesn't give you enough resources to handle the threats you're going to encounter and I understand the genre is Survival Horror with limited resources and whatnot but come on some of the bosses are almost (and in some cases completely) unbeatable without using certain ammo which means if you used really strong stuff like the Explosive Arrows early on in the game and didn't have that kind of power for later boss fights you're just put up shit creek without a paddle so you'll have to restart and be more greedy with your good ammo on your restarted file which can mean losing hours of progression which can be really REALLY frustrating the first game didn't do that so why does this one ? Another thing is having to use Ink Ribbons can be annoying too especially if you've made lots of progress only to not be able to save the game then dying and having to do a really hard part again made me feel a bit demoralized in some sections of the game. One last gripe is that the game will sometimes allow you to put the wrong items in the wrong spots but if you do that you can't take the item out of the wrong spot you put it in to change it and correct your mistake completely screwing you from progressing .overall though I enjoyed my time with Code Veronica quite a bit however I feel like it would greatly benefit from getting a remake to improve on some of the more frustrating aspects of the game.
