3/5 ★ – Cookiebabbus's review of A Date with Death.
I should start this off by saying that I am not really a big fan of this style of dating sim. I always felt chat ones are super restrictive since they have you the player having to chat back a lot and since everything is scripted the person you're playing as always feels like their own person not someone you've made or even a self insert If you're into that kind of thing.
However this game is extremely well polished. There's a ton of wonderful art, great animations, pronoun options and even the ability to customize your living space and MC to an extent! I hope more games adopt this kind of picrew style of making your mc! It works well for this kind of game
The dialogue is a little bit cringy for my taste. I like dating sims and I'm no stranger to over the top language but I do find it weird when the game sort of expects you the player character to find the person you're romancing irresistibly hot no matter what. I did like that you could have some banter with him and tease him a bit those were favorite parts but the dialogue over all just felt so unreal. That may also be because as I stated before the MC you're playing as has a predetermined personality before you ever get a chance to 'choose' anything for them. It's not really a good game if you like having a lot of choices and feeling like your choices make much of an impact. I noticed for the endings it's only like two conversations that matter everything else is very much the same
Now this is also a free game which was more than likely made to show off the studio and give a feel for their games to promote buying their other works! I did love seeing those tiny ads in the corner! But I did see a slay the princess ad and that made me grimace because I love slay the princess because it is such a hugely varied game where your choices feel like they matter everytime. These both claim to be choice making games but a date with death doesn't even hold a candle to that.
For what it was it wasn't a bad experience. The grim reaper has a lot of personality that made him fun to talk to even if I never felt like I was making choices and rather just listening to him converse with someone. It's also nice seeing the mystery of the MC unfold and neatly be solved it adds a little something to the days that made going back each day for more conversation have something to look forward to
It's not a game I'd play again or really recommend but I can tell the studio put a lot of effort into it! I think that's commendable even with my very personal gripes
