4/5 ★ – Cookiebabbus's review of Spin Hero.

This is a game for fans of games like Luck Be A Landlord and Bingle Bingle! It uses the familiar format of a slot machine mixed with RPG tactics the game has a ton of content to offer with many symbols that have their own unique abilities. One thing this game offers is tons of synergy. each symbol is guaranteed to work with another symbol or with the chosen characters, allowing for diverse builds. because of this I never felt tied to one moveset only and I liked going for different strategies each time. the pixel art is gorgeous. each enemy is simply designed and well animated so they're each charming and fit their areas perfectly. the art direction is very solid with everything having the same cute RPG pixels that reminds me of old school dungeon crawlers. however this game has one thing that prevents me from giving it a full 10/10. and that is the game's difficulty. while the first three stages feel mostly fair things gets blisteringly hard from the final stage 3 boss onward. even my toughest builds simply would get out matched and my characters would die way too fast before I could do anything about it. this was a consistent problem with all characters. it was only when getting lucky with the barbarian character and a specific build that I managed to pull through and kill the final boss. while I was happy with my accomplishment it did show to me that the game is way too hard for its own good. I'm not a fan of very easy rougelikes, especially ones with the slot machine mechanic like these. but it became less fun and more frustrating to see all my runs die at the exact same spot and to the exact same boss each time. I had to pivot to a mainly armor-building run to get past this boss consistently which reduced the strategies available and sucked some of that late game fun for me. I think the game could use a serious nerf for the stage 3 boss and onward. the game does offer harder difficulties after completing a run so I don't think itd deincentivize those who look for a more challenging experience. Something that is present in luck be a landlord and similar games is also the presence of relics. these are objects that can increase the synergy even further and I believe would make up for the difficulty curve. as is there's only runes which are rechargeable items and I don't think count as the same thing. runes are often a last resort type of item only reserved for boss fights. relics are something an entire build can be centered around that can complelty change your luck. With the sharp difficulty and the lack of relics I have to give this game a lower score. but I still think this game is worth the time to try out and beat at least once. however if you're looking for your next balato 100% experience I would steer clear for your own sake.
