4/5 ★ – Cooldown_Gaming's review of Citizen Sleeper.

I went into this game off its name and art style alone, not knowing anything else about it. Once I found out it was a dice-based, text adventure CRPG, I almost hard-noped right on out, as that's not usually my cup of tea. However, part of this backlog project is also to help me explore genres outside my comfort zone, and in this case, I am very glad I did. The loop of betting tasks on dice roles to manage all your quests and rebuild this shanty space station was truly satisfying and scratched that gambler's itch I tend to fall victim to. The story doesn't really solve my main issue with these types of games, as just walls and walls of expository text are just boring. Also, I don't like RPGs that tell me how my character (and by proxy myself) should be feeling. Organic experiences that let the narrative breathe and allow the audience to digest and process it on their terms are always stronger writing to me. However, the gameplay loop was satisfying enough and the characters endearing enough that I was driven to see it through and get a satisfying ending for my Sleeper and his band of misfits. 8/10
