3/5 ★ – Count_Gamer's review of Splitgate.
The game that was precisely engineered to be “the next thing”, influenced by so many of the top shooters in the market somehow failed, why is that?
Splitgate’s momentary success comes as a given when analyzing its gameplay. It offers just enough content for you to get hooked quite easily: dynamic yet familiar gun play with a diverse arrange of maps, easily traversable through the games innovative movement. In addition to the now common jet pack, Spligate offers a portal ability pulled right from Valves crown… and its great! It provides the right amount of spice to the tried and true arena shooter formula, giving new fun and creative ways to kill the enemy team and avoid being killed in the process.
Despite the alchemic concoction of video game ideas that is Spligate, it couldn’t stand on its own with that as its only claim to popularity. After being picked up by popular streamers and having the whole world playing the game it was quickly dropped. It failed to deliver on the fundamentals of the new “games as a service” motto, which is a rebrand of the previous “free to play motto”; constant updates and bullshit cosmetics to keep gamers pleased. It gave too little too late; like a battle pass with skins for guns, new characters and some other pointless garbage. They also added some game modes and even a battle royale (which Im sure is still playable considering player counts) but it wasn’t enough; the game is pronounced dead.
Maybe it was a result of market saturation or developers not giving their products the attention they deserve, but whatever the case, its a true shame. I didn’t get on Spligate at its peak, actually I got on it once it was long gone; a shell of its former self, yet I still had a blast. The core ideas are really good and if you have the patience to wait 10 minutes+ in a lobby you’ll get to enjoy them. Oh well, Im sure Spligate will look right in between PUBG and Fall Guys in my dead games collection :/
