3/5 ★ – Cryophage's review of Windjammers 2.

"Good fun despite the fact I don't know what I'm doing" I've never heard of the Windjammer series before today. A high-action, fast-paced competitive Frisbee game? It sounded like such a weird concept that I had to check it out. The experience I got when playing this game is very comparable to a classic arcade game similar to Street Fighter 2, or Soul Calibur. But instead of fighting, you're playing high-octane Frisbee! I love the 80s-tastic style of Windjammers 2. The game's graphics are hand-drawn, which only makes everything that much more impressive. The character designs are ridiculously enjoyable, the courts look lively and distinct from one another and everything has a enjoyably colorful look to it. The music actually didn't stand out to me too much because I ended up focusing on the matches too much to actually notice it much of the time. However, the few tracks I took a minute to stop and listen to? Unbelievably funky! Speaking of the gameplay, the incredible amount of variety available to the player in this game is flooring! There's so many things that you can do to go on the offensive or defend your own goal that I honestly had trouble remembering all of it. The characters only add to this, as their stats allow for different approaches and tactics. Finally, the arenas influence the gameplay by being unique from each other and not just by looking distinctively different, as they feature all sorts of different things to watch out for as you play through the game! As I played through the game, however, I started to become a bit disenfranchised as I realized what kind of game the creators were going for. Windjammers 2 is very clearly a game that draws inspiration from arcade games in every way. There's nothing wrong with this on paper, I just personally don't like arcade-style games that much? Also, the arcade mode features a limited amount of continues. This might come across as a nitpick but I personally feel that Credits are an outdated feature of gaming. They come across to me as a crutch to make things seem harder then they actually are, and any game that features them kinda makes me lose a bit of enjoyment. The game also starts to lose me a bit with its gameplay modes. You can play online, local Vs. and Arcade mode. Considering the style of game Windjammers 2 is clearly trying to replicate, the lack of gameplay options definitely won't bother the main audience this game is catering to. However, it comes with the consequence of being a bit less accessible to people like me who don't enjoy these types of games as much. All in All, I would give Windjammer a 6/10 with a word of caution to those who aren't too familiar/don't tend to enjoy to more arcade-like experiences.
