4.5/5 ★ – DAcgamer's review of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile.
Klonoa door to phantomile is one of the best 2D platformers I've ever experienced. Games like this are why I adore the PS1 and it's library. Klonoa's usage of enemys to help you solve puzzles and complete levels never ceased to impress me, it sounds simple, but they use the concept in so many ways. It never feels like a tacked on gimmick. The 2.5D look of the game does loads in keeping it feeling fresh as well. You'll have forks in the road where you need to diverge down one path, solve a puzzle and come back to that part to go down another once your done. It uses the extra layers extremely well and it always kept me excited to see what was in each new level. The music of each world and stage you visit is just outstanding, and the story of the game is one of if not the best storys i've played through in a platformer. Don't let the cutesy nature fool you, the ending of this game really gets the water works flowing, aside from that almost every character is just so charming an unique, they really are a blast to come across. While sure, the game is a bit on the easy side, that's not a bad thing at all. It was always so well designed that I never really cared, and in some places ( mainly the ending levels ) it got pretty challenging at times. Klonoa door to phantomile is an amazing experience, and another overlooked gem on the ps1. You can find it on the PS3 and PSvita, PSN. As well as a WII remake which while a bit easier, rocks some impressive visuals for the console, along with additional content that makes it just as if not better than the original
