4/5 ★ – DanteHR's review of Atomic Heart.
Most of us have been eagerly waiting for this game and I can say that it was worth it, ``Atomic Heart'' developed by ``Mundfish'' and published by ``Focus Home Interactive'' delivers a unique experience when it comes to Open World and combat. Inspired by the ``Bioshock'' and ``Wolfenstein'' series, ``Atomic Heart'' is not just a simple copy, but a clusterfuck of great ideas, from interesting puzzles, to satisfying combat and finally to enemies with a spectacular design.
`Atomic Heart' has a very good start, one of the best intros I've seen in gaming, the art and creative vision are absolutely insane, the street parade, the way the game works and the storytelling of the environment are top notch. The presentation of the part of the story in the intro is a little confusing and the presentation of the main character does not give much hope.
When it comes to combat, Atomic Heart really delivers. A melee-combat similar to the one in ``Dying Light'', even much more satisfying and fast. Some of the weapons that you will use throughout the game are generic, but the other part.. Boy, they are insane. From Rocket-launchers to weapons based on `polymer' and the icing on the cake being the Rail-Gun, an absolutely Overpowered and satisfying weapon to use, created for lovers of total destruction. In addition to the amazing arsenal of unlockable weapons along the way, you can find that you can upgrade them with different assortments of amazing attachments for absolutely every weapon, unlocking the blueprint and crafting using materials at a `crafting station'. What makes the combat in ``Atomic Heart'' more special is the ``Charles'' glove. The glove you unlock at the beginning of the game and stays with you until the last heartbeat. `Charles' allows you to have superhuman abilities, such as: (telekinesis, ice manipulation, polymer shield and strong electric shocks). The difficulty of the game is very refreshing. I wouldn't compare it to a ``Souls'' type game from ``Fromsoftware'' in terms of difficulty level, but there is definitely a glimmer of difficulty. The game definitely lacks bosses, a large part of them look the same and are generic, but the other part delivers some more than good bosses, impeccable design and difficult move set.
Although it has a strong intro and insane combat, ``Atomic Heart'' doesn't stop there, the graphics look too good, a ``behemoth'' of a graphics game. Even without Ray Tracing effects, ``Atomic Heart'' is one of the most beautiful FPS games. The game runs super smooth on PC, even with some mediocre specifications you can have a playtrough with preset low in 60 FPS. When it comes to the effects of the wounds, I was pleasantly surprised to see that every blow I gave to the enemies was clearly visible and it was noticeable that you were really hitting a soulless robot. Shadows and reflections are worthy of praise given that ``Mundfish'' used an outdated engine.
The sound effects of the game are great, you can distinguish the sounds of the enemies when they are behind you without worry, But the music, the music is insane. All bosses in the game have impeccable soundtracks that keep you hooked. The music is on the same theme as the game, we can say that it is a hybrid between techno and Russian music. I have reached the in partthat I have to talk about the dialogue.. The dialogue is horrible, that's all I have to say. Lines equivalent to those of the last game from ``Square Enix'', ``Forspoken''.
The story of ``Atomic Heart'' is not exactly the most attractive story in the history of FPS. Although the beginning of the game was quite strong, the continuation of the game is not so so great, a ton of meaningless plot twists, very boring characters and a ton of other missions that have nothing to do with the story of the game itself. However, the game is trending to have only a few interesting characters, such as: ``Granny Zina'', ``Dmitriy Sergeevich Sechenov'' and ``Larisa Filatova''. The game itself is quite linear, you just have to follow them the words of your glove ``Charles''. The end of the game not being so surprising, it opens the doors to a possible new sequel. I just hope that the sequel straightens things out mistakes that ``Atomic Heart'' made.
With a surprisingly good combat and unbelievable graphics, ``Atomic Heart'' is not quite a perfect game, it also has its major flaws. The game gives us quite a unique and interesting experience given that it is the developers' first game. Not to go on too long, ``Atomic Heart'' is a must play game for fans of apocalyptic FPS.
