3.5/5 ★ – DanteHR's review of FragPunk.
After the success of "Marvel Rivals", a truly unexpected success, I wouldn't have trusted other titles that Netease would publish, as the saying goes, lightning never strikes the same place twice. Indeed, I was right to a certain extent.
Being a generic hero shooter, but with a pretty interesting concept, I was intrigued to see what it was all about.. (especially with such a LITTLE price tag). In the first 15-20 minutes I spent in the tutorial and the main menu, I could tell that a lot of work was put into it.
We've reached the most important part in a shooter, of any kind.. THE GAMEPLAY! Starting with the gunplay, I really liked everything that was presented to me in the tutorial and the first match with players. The animations are smooth and sparkling, the clunkyness is non-existent, and the character abilities are simple and precise. However, I am very critical of the game for the concept that was supposed to capture the players initially, namely, the magic cards.. or whatever, I'm still not sure what the exact name is. The cards are abilities that you can activate at the beginning of the match with your team, each player has 2 points that they can invest in cards.. each have different rarities, those with higher rarity can cost more points, and those with lower rarity can cost from 1 to 2 points. The poor execution and the chaos that this mechanic can bring, made me give up on it after a few hours.
As for the graphics, I really had no complaints. Just like Marvel Rivals (another recent and very popular title from Netease), Fragpunk is developed in the superb Unreal Engine 5.. and even runs very well even on low-end systems. The beautiful animations and touching art style in the game, can capture a ton of people, it is a combination between Marvel Rivals, Apex Legends and Valorant, if I could call it that.
A very important category in a shooter is the sound.. where Fragpunk manages to deliver us something stable and direct, without interruptions and stupid bugs that can ruin the experience for many people.
Overall, I wasn't disappointed, it's a pretty 'premium' game, being Free to Play, but I wouldn't see it having as much success as big Esports titles, like Valorant, CS2, Apex Legends and Marvel Rivals, however, with some seasonally added content, I could recommend returning to this game.
