4.5/5 ★ – DanteHR's review of Marvel Rivals.
And here is the most anticipated Online-PVP game of this year, and fortunately, the developers managed to satisfy me in all the key aspects that the game would need to be a great Online-PVP. Marvel's Rivals, made and published by "Netease". is a game that has aroused a lot of suspicions since they announced the development of the game. Especially after the history of "Netease" and Marvel games, such as "Marvel's Avengers", I was not exactly the most excited person. I am going to tell you all the doubts and praises that I encountered throughout my playthrough.
From the very beginning, the game presented itself very honorably, although I have dozens of hours in Overwatch1/2, I wanted to see what the tutorial in this game is like, so I tested it. If I can call it that way, a nice tutorial that teaches you the basics to be able to orient yourself in a match with players. From the first 10 minutes, I was very satisfied with the artstyle, it seemed very unique and suitable for a game of this kind that bears fruit in the Marvel universe.
We've come to the part that should define a game of this genre.. THE COMBAT! Again, I was equally satisfied even with the combat, before the game was launched, I found it very clunky and boring, but after a few good matches, I realized how good it actually is.. and to be honest, I don't think I would ever go back to Overwatch or any other game of this genre. The part that I should probably4 talk about the most is probably the heroes. Being a game with a very big license, the developers went all out when it came to uniqueness. Each character, although some are similar in movies or comics, were made in a very special way here. For example, The Winter Soldier and Punisher have, mostly, the same abilities, nothing too special. But here, there is a difference from heaven to Earth. gameplay wise. As for the abilities, not everyone has a certain number, one may have 3, another 4 , and there are even certain heroes with 7+ abilities, however, this does not make them much superior to the others. For the most part, the melee attack is a priority for each hero, but it is very rarely used by players. In total, there are 33 heroes and 8 unique maps, I will try to not list and explain each hero, because it would take me forever, but they are divided into 2 categories. Popular heroes and underrated heroes (they can also be villains). The game balance is quite good, I have not met one character being much worse than the other, it all depends on the player's skill. There can only be characters that are easier to play than the others. I tend to mention that the developers will add a generous number of heroes in each new season (a season is approximately 3 months long). As for anything else, I really have nothing to comment on, the microtransactions are minimal, and they even have very good additions, especially the one based on the Battle pass, even if you didn't have time to finish it during the period it's running.. the game doesn't put a barrier on you, it lets you finish it even after 1 year from the initial launch, hats off to Netease!
On the graphics side, I won't complain at all, the game looks very good thanks to the graphics engine it uses (Unreal Engine 5), but it also gets a massive boost from that grandiose artstyle . I was pleasantly surprised to see that the game runs so well on PC and PS5, the optimization was done very well. Even when the game had over 400k players on Steam. The maps are full of life and perfectly crafted for a similar aesthetic to that of the comics. They managed to respect the original, even down to the last detail. However, I was most pleased with the character designs. The amount of work that the artists put into making such a good design for the characters is on a whole other level.
We've come to the sound part, personally I can say that the voice acting is great, I liked it, however, I think that the characters' phrases should be a little reduced, because this thing gets very tiring and can capture your concentration from the combat. The most satisfying part is, without a doubt, the soundtrack of the projectiles, especially the firearms. No hero/villain managed to disappoint me in this criterion. However, the only dissatisfaction I have is regarding the times when you make a kill or are killed, I had a ton of matches in which I didn't even know if I had a kill, just because the sound is not changed from the usual soundtrack, or rather, it doesn't stand out enough. The music was decent, however, I can't say much about it, because I was focusing too much on the combat and the chaos around me.
With brilliant combat, incredibly good graphics and design, I'd say Marvel's Rivals is one of the most fun multiplayer games I've played in years. It managed to do what studios with huge budgets and superior developers couldn't. Given that the game came out so complete, I can see the game having a consistently huge player base and a bright future, filled with big updates, heroes, cosmetics and great maps.
