4.5/5 ★ – DanteHR's review of Turbo Kid.

And here is the arrival of the 2nd video game in the "metroidvania" category of this year. "Turbo Kid", developed and published by "Outerminds" is one of the best and unique metroidvania games on which I have played recently. Being rather a tribute to "Turbo Kid" (the 2015 film), the game actually managed to be a very good adaptation in a suitable format. It has a ton of elements that makes it very replayable, it has an intriguing story and very interesting characters. The beginning of the game is quite quiet.. our protagonist who has the same name as the title of the game is riding his bike through a mountainous area until he meets some robbers who steales the bike and leaves him almost out of breath. Afterwards, our protagonist is saved by a mysterious lady named "Naomi". That's all I can tell you about the beginning of the story... the game delivers a fairly simple tutorial focused on combat and platforming. After completing the tutorial, the action of a real metroidvania begins. The game makes you explore a lot and makes you get multiple powers, as in any metroidvania game. On the combat side, "Turbo Kid" does a good job of delivering a combination between melee and ranged. Although the game focuses more on ranged combat, melee also has large role throughout your progress. You are given only one starting weapon, that being the "Turbo Glove", your ranged weapon. As you advance in the story, you will also unlock other useful weapons, plus a variety of ammo for your gauntlet. You also unlock a ton of helpful skills in platforming. The first and most important would be your bike, which you unlock in the first hour of the game. You can use it to cross faster and climb certain walls. I would like to mention that skills such as "Double Jump" or "Dash" are present in the game.. even so, they are delivered to us a little later. The variety of enemies is not very wide, but I feel that there are enough, they are all unique and lethal, you must not underestimate even the smallest enemy. As for the bosses, they were the best snack in the entire game, delivered to us in the most unique way possible, and had a slightly higher difficulty, but the most important thing is that their design is absolutely flawless. Although they are few, at least they are of high quality, the game makes you use every skill you have at the time in order to defeat them. As for the graphics, I can't say much about it. Visually, the game is delightful, it is a pixel-art with many details placed in the background. I was very pleased to see that the aesthetics of the game are similar to the ones from the movie, I felt the same state playing the game, as if I had watched the movie for the first time... a very cozy state. The characters and enemies design is quite simplistic and boring, but at least it suits them. The design of the bosses, on the other hand, as I mentioned above, is absolutely flawless. Most of the areas in the game were very different from the others and that made me very happy. We have reached the part where we talk about the sound, the sound itself is retro and old, perfect for the mood that the game gives you along the playtrough. The game was not endowed by the most amazing sound effects, but I was satisfied overall in the 8 hours I spent in the game. I want to talk a little about the music... the music from "Turbo Kid" is wonderful in the true sense of the word. Like the sound, it fits very well with the aesthetics we have in the game, something very retro, 90s vibe, but which fills you with dopamine. A music of this type is absolutely necessary in a metroidvania video game. The story of "Turbo Kid" is relatively changed compared to the film that bears its name. It is a kind of continuation of the story compared to what we saw in the movie, the same protagonist, a ton of characters which re-appear, but a totally different main goal. The story delivered by the developers is not a very complex one, but as in most metroidvania games, in addition to the main goal, the protagonist of ours goes into other "secondary" purposes, if I may say so. The characters were very good, they had great backstories and were very emotional. The characters themselves felt real. I don't want to give too many spoilers, so I'll let you delve into the story, you just have to expect many twists and turns. "Turbo Kid" is a metroidvania that I didn't expect to offer so much... the game is full of everything, good combat, great replayability, good story, nice music, etc. It's an almost perfect metroidvania game. I recommend everyone to try the game, especially at the price it has. You can have fun for 8+ hours, without even regretting that you bought it. I congratulate the developers that they managed to create such a good game at such a low price. 8.8/10 Made by DanteHR
