2.5/5 ★ – DanteSnowcone's review of Hero's Adventure: Road to Passion.
I really wanted to like this game, but there is just so much in the way of me having fun. I gave it multiple chances because I’ve never played a wuxia RPG and I love the look of it all, and now I’m tapping out.
The translation to English is not great and makes understanding many things difficult or impossible. But even if I could comprehend everything on the main menu’s many tabs, I would still feel absolutely flooded with stats and data that is cumbersome to navigate. Menus overlap menus and make reading everything a chore. I don’t know what half of the stats mean, and it’s very hard to keep track of all the items and what they’re for.
I could get over most of that if the combat were good, but it’s lackluster. It’s styled like a tactics game but it lacks the appropriate fine tuning. I can’t control where I’m facing after I attack, and going into a fight I have no idea if I’m too weak or too strong. I trounced a cave of dozens of bandits, then got to the final boss and couldn’t lay a finger on him.
What I do love about this game is the cities and environments. It all looks beautiful, and there’s a lot going on in the locations I’ve been. Dojos, palace grounds, markets, and everywhere is full of people, some who are there just for color which shows how much they cared about making this world feel alive. I wish the stories had more development though; most of the time I just give someone a bunch of gifts and then they become my best friend.
I don’t know, I bet this is a good game in its original language but it just doesn’t work well for me. If there’s ever a more official translation I might try it again, but I’m not gonna sink any more time into a game I don’t understand.
