2/5 ★ – DarkDrawer's review of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth.
As someone who does not particularly care for Miles Edgeworth, I will do my best to be completely unbiased while reviewing his game.
Anyway, this game is absolutely buns in trying to convert me from the riveting courtroom to the boring investigations. The third person perspective did little to really expand more on what a 1st-person game would take on. Additionally, the new spritework just looks off for some characters, especially Gumshoe. And this game also commits the sin of bringing back a bunch of characters I don't like like Larry, Oldbag, Masque de Masque II (for some reason). It's just all so derivative. I'm sad to say the new stuff for characters I do like (Franziska, Ema, Maggie), doesn't feel substantial. The new characters are fine, but they lack the presence some of my favorites would have, except for Lang. He was cool.
The deductions aren't really that cool as usually its bridging together obvious evidence to make a conclusion that is also obvious. This is the main unique portion of the game. The rebuttals are discount witness testimony, but more numerous and less weighty than a normal witness. It's just not that fun. It's also extremely wordy. I think the script could've been cut down at least half and little would be lost. It felt like I was mashing through dialogue to get anything actually worth listening to.
The end villain and his subordinates are kinda convuluted in how it happened and the assistant of the game (that comes late into the game and is only really featured as the assistant in 2 cases) doesn't have as much emotional connection to certain aspects of the case as I'd want in an assistant character. The backstory of the Yatagarasu was a cool poster child for the mystery in the story, but the answer brought more questions with it, at least in terms of the order of events. The end boss is discount Gant. Some of the designs are pretty cool though, although, the filler case is particularly weak.
The game tries to be a complete Ace Attorney game while both bringing little new to the series, and failing to be a fun coherent tale. Also, Edgeworth HAS to be the worst of the protagonists I've played in an Ace Attorney game. He never feels too challenged and he just has so much more advantages in being a prosecutor in this universe than a Defense Attorney. The next game has a particular reputation of being the older brother of the duology, so I guess I'll see soon if my opinion on Edgeworth will change in that game.
I want my two goobers, Nick and Maya back! Phoenix got disbarred for lesser things that Edgeworth has done lol.
