4/5 ★ – DarkDrawer's review of AM2R - Return of Samus.
This game is fun. My second Metroid game to play is surprisingly a fanmade one. This game has pretty fun exploration, responsive controls, great visuals, and is made with a lot of love. Where this game falls short is the bosses and some nitpicks.
I don't have much to say on this one. Piloting Samus is fun and exploring is fun. Essentially this entire game is a back and forth as the lava lowers which is a bit of a head scratcher, but fine. Lowering the lava is done through fighting the bosses, the metroids.
These bosses blow as they just sorta float towards you and you have to somehow hit their belly with a missile. The arenas for these fights end up being what makes each boss different as you end up having less and less room to move around. This can't be overstated that this is an aspect of the game that does not go away as you'll be fighting metroids to lower the lava the entire time up until the boss rush.
The order of getting the items were interesting as the very last item ended up being the ice beam. Getting each powerup was exciting, however some stuff was wack. Lava in particular was annoying as falling into it is almost too punishing imo.
The good of this game definitely lies in going through each dungeon and exploring, but the main gimmick sorta bogs it down.
