4/5 ★ – DarkDrawer's review of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.
This game is insanely underrated for being a solid cozy time on the ds with a basic jrpg. Maybe it's because of some silliness of the times in recent years, but this games uses the Sonic cast to a degree not seen since heroes (or the murder of Sonic the hedgehog). Honestly, there's potential for Sonic in the rpg genre imo.
The music, which is an issue cited a lot, is pretty good aside from the 2 tracks played in the main 2 starting areas. Shade is a pretty interesting character that'll never see the light of day and the boss is pretty unique for Sonic.
combat is fun, filling in combos with the stylus and building a team to use combo moves with. Basic, but fun. Reminds me of Elite Beat Agents. With that being said, this can get repetitive as can the combat music, so more variety would be nice in that respect.
Traversal is fine. I do like the exploration. Finding stuff in the overworld is exciting. With that being said, it can be frustrating to build a party around what obstacles need to be overcome with a button prompt.
This game isn't the deepest, but certainly seems to have more sauce than some of the newer titles in Sonic. Would like more spinoff games like this. Spinoffs seem to be a dying thing in gaming.
