2/5 ★ – DarkTriforceFilms's review of Final Fantasy X.
Final Fantasy X was a game I thought I remembered from my childhood, but opening the game up now on Xbox One, the remastered edition that includes X-2 as well, I've found out that I think I was really just remembering the beginning of the first Kingdom Hearts.
I've only played about an hour of the game so far, shelving it for a bit just because this game really makes it hard for you to get into it. Most of the hour so far has been just cutscenes, which normally I'd be fine with, but it is almost impossible to have any idea of what is going on in the game at this point. All I can gather comes from the little knowledge I had from the game as a kid, so I know Tidus is a Blitz Ball player.. and that's about it.
This wouldn't normally be a problem for me, but all of the gameplay so far has been clunky and boring in this first hour. The tutorial fights the game puts you through could be just a product of the time and how the game has aged, but playing turn based fights when you have no other ability than your basic attack, it doesn't allow for a lot of variety in your fights. Having the occasional side character like Auron or the appropriately named "????" that shows up in the Underwater City does help, as they tend to have some other skill or item that makes the fights more interesting, but it comes after 3 or 4 fights of just you pressing attack again and again until you can get an overdrive that starts a QuickTime event that is also unclear on how to function. On top of this, the exploring sections have such strange camera controls, almost making the game seem like an old Resident Evil game, with the camera fixed in place and changing angles depending on where you walk in the room. It's very jarring and makes it hard to walk around, and makes it feel very janky. It really just starts the game off so boringly and it's hard to keep any motivation to keep going.
I genuinely would like to continue playing through FFX, as I know the game will be more fun later on with more party members and more information about the already insane story it is setting up, but the fact I have no idea how long it'll take really puts a damper on my motivation to do so. I'll shelve it for now, but I am not sure if I'll ever return to it.
