4.5/5 ★ – Darren_Pendell's review of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.
What an amazing stealth game. This game oozes the political spy thriller setting of the early 2000s. Ubisoft Montreal nailed how a stealth game should feel with this entry. The map design clearly came first before designing other aspects of this game and that's a great thing! You're constantly mapping out and exploring different routes you can take around your enemies or obstacles. The light and sound meter are an amazing way to help you keep track of who can see and hear you at all times. This game introduced my favorite mechanic to the Splinter Cell series and that is the frame by frame animation that you get 100% control of when you get close to an enemy. This level of control you have allows for super smooth sneaking and takedowns which was super satisfying.
The map verity is very strong in this game with many locations around the world and multiple styles of maps to tackle. The gear available allows for multiple play styles and many options to take out or avoid enemies. The first 3/4 of this game is 10/10 material but sadly the last 3 missions of this game take a big dive in "quality". I say this in quotes because the quality isn't actually bad, but the game is actively taking you out of the stealth mode you've been playing and tries to pick the pace up which doesn't always work. I found myself getting annoyed on how the map and encounters were designed at the end but even with that these missions are still extremely enjoyable. Defiantly worth checking out.
