4.5/5 ★ – DarrensTrashBag's review of Bloodborne.
This is the second souls game I have completed following Elden Ring. After beating all of the bosses I can say that I liked Elden Ring much better. There are just a lot more quality of life improvements within that game. Let me list of stuff I hated about this game. The main thing is that your vial count does not reset after you die. I think that this is such a stupid design because once you die to a boss, you want to immediately get back in there and give it another go, but instead you have to go back and grind runes just to restock your vials just so you can fight the boss again. If I am just going to go get all my vials back anyway, why not respawn me with them so that I do not waste my time? The second thing I hated were a third of the bosses. There was only one boss I had a lot of trouble with and that was Lawrence, as of now, I think that Lawrence is worse than Malenia. There is barely any room to fight him, he can reach across the room, he will either one or two shot me despite being very highly leveled with high defense, and his third phase was just torture. Other bosses were just unfun to fight, these being: The Witch of Hemwick, Rom The Vacuous Spider (second worse boss in the game), Celestial Emissary, Micolash, and Living Failures. The gimmick of these bosses were just boring. My final complaint is that the game forced me to go into NG+ after fighting Moon Presence so I was forced to do the DLC in NG+. This is clearly stupid and is probably why I had so much trouble with Laurence.
Now the good: The environments, enemy designs, score, and writing is incredible. This is one of the most immersive games I have played. I liked the idea of regaining health by hitting someone after getting hit, it is a very fun mechanic and I kind of want all souls games to have this. My favorite bosses were by far Gehrman, Father Gascoigne, Orphan of Kos, and Lady Maria. These 1v1s against fast enemies are my favorite so far in these games. Once again, the feeling of having so much trouble at the beginning and then slowly becoming better and better is very satisfying. Perhaps if I do a second playthrough of this game my opinion will change drastically. Since I had to re-fight a few bosses to do the DLC and I had little trouble doing that. Overall the things that I liked really carried the experience for me.
