4/5 ★ – DarrensTrashBag's review of Mario Kart 64.
I did not grow up with this game, so I admit I might not be as good as other people. With that said, I think that this game is very overrated. The driving is just not that smooth; it is very difficult to take quick turns and adjusting yourself on the track to avoid an obstacle is almost impossible. Several tracks have such obstacles to make each one unique, however, the controls and terrible drifting mechanics make it a pain to go through each one. Whenever I got to Rainbow Road, I signed in relief because all of those turns were wide and I could see if I was drifting correctly. I was. They made the cars out of rubber from how far they bounce off of everything. Your car spins out just by turning too fast, as well as drifting for too long. Later games are clearly better when it comes to design. I will never come back to this game for its single player. Playing with other people makes this experience much more bearable.
Here are my thoughts on each track:
Luigi Raceway - pretty minimal and easy track. Not much to say other than it being a decent track.
Moo Moo Farm - the moles can be pretty annoying, as well as the bridge posts at the end. Other than that, this track is in top 5 for me honestly.
Koopa Troopa Beach - very odd turns and a difficult shortcut. The rising tide makes this track stand out a bit, but nothing too special.
Kalimari Desert - having to wait for the train to go by allows anyone who just squeezes by an automatic win. The ambience is great. Just raise the train.
Toad's Turnpike - Very great if it was not very difficult to meticulously move around each car. item boxes are annoying to grab. But when the course works and there are not six cars blocking your way, then it is quite enjoyable.
Frappe Snowland - get rid of the snowmen. There are way too many of them. With the tight turns it is very hard to avoid them last second.
Choco Mountain - Oddly, one of my favorites, the only thing I don't like is how long it takes to recover after getting hit by a boulder.
Mario Raceway - Other than the large pipe, this course does not stand out to me that much.
Wario Stadium - Way too long. At least the Double Dash version looked nice and had some unique sections. This is just a dirt pit.
Sherbet Land - Get rid of this course. Easily the worst in the game. The thought of making precise turns in an ice level sucks. The penguins are in the worst possible place, and the section with the adult penguins always slows me down no matter which route I take. The pathways are way too thin to have even two racers near each other without hitting one of the penguins. Horrible level design.
Royal Raceway - I really like this one, especially with the full model Peach's castle you can drive to. The second to last turn can mess up your chances at getting top three if you mess it up. Other than that turn, very good.
Bowser's Castle - Could have been good. But they had to include the womps blocking every pathway. The two womps that follow you are so hard to react to that it makes me wonder if they designed it to guarantee hit you. The thin bridge is easy to fall off of. This is probably the worst 3d bowser stage in Mario Kart. 2nd worst track in the game.
D.K's Jungle Parkway - The 90 degree left turn after the launch is just baffling to me. I hate the coconuts or whatever they are being thrown at the player if they are a foot on the grass. Thin bridge means items left on there will hit you. Other than that, decent level.
Yoshi Valley - the classic that makes me want to bash my brains in. The fuzzies left on the track are impossible to drive by. Falling off the track takes ten seconds just to get back to driving. Top 5 course honestly from how unique it is.
Banshee Boardwalk - Some weirds turns but overall is a fine track. The giant cheep cheep is cool.
Rainbow Road - incredible rainbow road. It is too long, but making it shorter just ruins the spectacle of the visuals and the score. You have plenty of time to drift and avoid the chain chomps. Best track in the game.
Overall, this is ranking higher for the multiplayer. As a single player experience, I would give it a 60/100 but with the multiplayer, I am giving it a
82/100.
