3.5/5 ★ – DarrensTrashBag's review of Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Xenoblade X contains so many flaws and yet some many great qualities. It makes me wonder if I do or do not like this game. Let's start with the good. The last half of the story, specifically Lao's arc. Lao is the best character of the game and possibly a top ten in the series. The exploration of these worlds can be wondrous, although I think that this game has the worst looking world out of all the games, but it is still good. Some of the heart to heart missions were pretty good, like HB and Murderess's questlines. Most of the soundtrack is pretty good, except most of it being heard is within New LA. The combat is still addictive Xenoblade combat.
The bad: The UI is the worst part of the game. I do not understand how they think the menus are easy to use and are not complicated at all. The fact that the game explains nothing at all couples this. The tutorials that pop up have tiny text that tells you the useful stuff, and the rest is just showing the model of the character speaking. For my first playthrough I did not even know about the class system. Overdrive is not explained at all and even when I tried to look up what to do, it is still way too complex. The second worst part of the game is Tatsu. He is just a useless character. They bring him along to be a diplomat to the people of Mira, but then they meet L and they make him be the diplomat. And then they use neither of those characters to be the diplomat for 80% of the game. The joke of Tatsu looking like a potato gets very old after the 2nd time they say it, as well as the 30th time they say it. One nitpick is that the music during the cutscenes is way too loud.
Overall, I think that people who like Xenoblade should play this game only for the last half of the story and the combat. That is it. Luckily I enjoyed this game more after a second playthrough. It is still the worst Xenoblade game.
