3.5/5 ★ – DeluxeSamuel's review of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun.
Warhammer 40,000 is a fun shooter in a universe that I'd love to play in more, even if I feel a little underwhelmed here.
It's a fun game, first and foremost; I don't discount that. It feels sleek and satisfying to carve through the Chaos hordes with the various weapons here. Most weapons are punchy and powerful and I largely enjoyed playing and swapping between them all.
It can be a little difficult at times. Not hugely, but enough that I died a few times, especially during some of the "purge" sections (which are like mini horde modes in the campaign). Constantly moving, changing weapons and keeping your head on a swivel is definitely the best way to play and keep alive.
Given the type of game it is, it is clear why this wasn't the focus; but I'd have liked to see more from the story. It starts with a short cutscene that sets up the story but shows very little reason or context beyond that, granted, there's also cutscenes at the end of every chapter but the combined length of every cutscene (and therefore story) is less than 5 minutes in total. I know the gameplay was the priority here and they are trying to emulate they style of the older boomer shooter Doom-style games but I wanted for more of it and I don't believe that the overall product would have suffered for it.
My time with Boltgun was pretty short, with my final playtime only coming to about 9 hours. I'll probably get more time out of it when I play more of the Horde Mode (which I only attempted the once) and when I get around to playing the DLC.
It's a fun game game but unless you're a big fan of either Warhammer 40k or the older style Doom games, then I'd probably wait for either a bundle with the DLC or waiting for it to hop on sale.
