5/5 ★ – DennisKaito's review of Spyro Reignited Trilogy.
As someone who grew up playing Spyro 1, 2, and 3 on the original PlayStation, I have a deep, nostalgic love for the series. Spyro’s cool and funny vibe, his loyal companion Sparks, the atmosphere, the soundtrack, and the platforming-focused level design all left a lasting impression on me. The games weren’t overloaded – they were simple in the best way possible, yet you still had to put in effort to find everything. I absolutely loved that balance.
The later titles in the series, to be honest, didn’t quite hit the mark for me. They tried to introduce too many extra perks and abilities, which felt like an attempt to shift Spyro into more of an action-adventure direction. In my opinion, that didn’t fit the platforming genre or the core identity of Spyro. It felt like they were trying to reinvent something that was already great.
So when the Spyro Reignited Trilogy was announced, I was thrilled. For me, it was easily the most anticipated game – maybe not from an objective standpoint, but emotionally, absolutely. Spyro has always been my favorite game, and this remaster did not disappoint.
The developers stayed true to the original. They didn’t stuff the trilogy with unnecessary additions. Instead, they focused on a complete visual overhaul, done with a ton of care and attention to detail. One of my favorite touches was the option to toggle between the original and the new soundtrack – a perfect nod to long-time fans.
This is exactly how a remaster should be: respectful of the original, modernized with today’s graphics, and full of heart. If the developers ever decide to make a Spyro 4, I honestly wouldn’t want anything more than for them to stay on this path.
The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a textbook example of how to breathe new life into a classic without losing what made it special in the first place.
