5/5 ★ – Diluted_Thought's review of Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition.

11 years later and this game has aged beautifully to me. After plenty of Action / Adventure fantasy games coming back to "Darksiders II" was an absolute treat. But apart from the great combat and fun story I realized something this time I hadn't realized on my first playthrough of this game, Death is (so far) my favorite character of the 4. Sure he looks dope but apart from the his ill design death seems to exhibit more humanity than some of his siblings. Where Strife exhibits a Deadpool like character and War is an unwavering storm of silent anger, Death shows a willingness to help where he can and make things right, all the while, do what he can to save his brother War. There is a quote from one of the stone guardians in the game were it says something, and I might be paraphrasing here, "You are not as cold as your name my imply" to which Death reply's almost embarrassed "keep that to yourself". We continue to see this throughout the entirety of the game and I this humanity is what really makes Death stand out as a character with a heart in an otherwise brutal world. But being able to revisit so many locations and fight so many tough bosses and unlocking some fantastic weapons I had a gas searching every dungeon and hidden area. I had forgot so much of this game too which is a damn shame. The soundtrack of "Darksiders 2" was also quite wonderful and varied full of epic sounds and beautiful melodies which I didn't remember either. I found myself falling in love with the music by Jesper Kyd which really made this game feel like the Fantasy epic it was. I found myself naming some of my weapons after other fantasy characters or legendary weapons from other games. Some of my possessed Scythes were "Dante & Virgil", "Dragon's Bane" & "Oblivion" while some of my secondarys were "dRaven", "Astroth" & the simply titled "Black". I had a hell of a fun time with this feature. After finishing the DLC dungeons and decking out death in the Crow outfit I came away satisfied with my adventures in the Forge Lands, Death Planes, Lost Light, Earth & so on. I do have 1 gripe though. So i played the Deathinitive edition on the PS4 and this game crashed more than any other game I've played for that system. I'm not sure what was happening but it must have crashed something like 7 times throughout my adventure. Weird. It didn't kill my enjoyment of the game but it was frustrating non the less. There was a point in time when I was, maybe, a little more than halfway through my adventure and some life changing news came about and really soured my existence. I put this game down for about 3 or 4 weeks in order to deal with things but once I picked it back up it was like I fell in love with it all over again and it really helped me get through some of the mess going on in my own head. I've already got "Darksiders III" ready for play on my next days off but this one is going to be reeeeallllly hard to beat given everything I've just mentioned. Still I'm seeing this franchise through to the end. On to the next adventure!
