3.5/5 ★ – Diluted_Thought's review of Far Cry: New Dawn.

I had an itch to play a new Far Cry game and haven't played anything new since 4. Having said that I visit Blood Dragon at least once a year but I wanted a new experience and I figured "New Dawn" was gonna be the way to go. As a fan of the post apocalyptic settings "Dawn" gave me what I wanted, but It did lack a certain punch. One of the things I instantly loved about this game is its mix of lush green environments and pink neon paint. Call me a sucker. Then again Far Cry has had a pedigree for beautiful settings. I was impressed at the level of detail that went into this. I was impressed with every abandoned house, cave, mountain top and of course the amusement park and everything else in between. I mean part of the fun was simply exploring. And in my case always took Timber with me everywhere I went. Me and that dog were inseparable! In fact I think this was the first game I played where I was able to pet dogs. Ya’ll don’t know how long I’ve waited for that feature. Another feature I enjoyed was my roster of partners and the variety of characters I was able to take with me on any particular mission. Shout outs to Horatio the Hog. The Perk system was also a first for me. I was able to start unlocking new skill pretty quickly so most of my run was pleasant. The crafting system in this game was sort of hit or miss for me as I really didn’t dive into any of the ugly looking guns you could make. Fortunately for me I was able to craft some of the better looking weapons from the Gurilla and Blood Dragon packs. Those got me through most of the game. The hardest hittin saw launcher and the Bison Burger grenade launcher were great additions but I didn’t use them until the last few hours of the game. I missed a big part of the story by not playing Far Cry 5 proper but I got the gist of everything that was happening so I never felt too lost during the story that was unfolding. I’ll be honest though, I do love Micky and Lou as the villains' since they were immediately unlikeable from the jump. As with the other Fry Cry villains' I’ve faced I absolutely showed no mercy. But it did have a hard time pulling the trigger. That boss fight was incredibly long! I was doing chip damage to these girls and I stayed up until 2 in the morning trying to finish that fight! Ethan didn’t take quite as long though. I did want to mention that I love playing stealth in these games. There’s something very satisfying about being a ninja and silently taking out your foes as to not raise any alarms. My favorite load out: Blood Dragon Bow, Gurilla SPM, Bison Burger and Gurilla Magnum. And when I found out I could unlock parts of the Rex Colt costume you best believe I took some time to unlock those as well. I mean how cool is it to feel like Rex again in another post apocalyptic scenario? Despite the fun I had I was a little let down by the power of some the weapons in this game. Having the ability to upgrade them was nice but I felt even with the upgrades the changes were so insignificant that I would have to upgrade them at least 5-8 times for me to feel any difference in them. I’m sure I’m in the minority hear but even though I did retry some of the missions and got more Ethanol it would have taken me many more tries and many more hours to make any significant changes to my weapons damage output. This was a slight let down and little inconvenient but because my main go to is stealth kills I saved myself a lot of bullets and grief. Far Cry New Dawn has plenty to do and so many beautiful places to explore but it definitely felt like it was missing something, I just can’t quite put my finger on it. Still its a solid 7 and I think I’m good on Far Cry for at least another 3-4 years.
