4/5 ★ – Diluted_Thought's review of Ratchet & Clank Collection.
(Review of PSVita versions)
Replaying the Ratchet and Clank trilogy through this collection was an awesome blast back to the early 2000s and the games are still just as charming, funny and wonderful as ever.
I played the original quadrilogy back during a summer in my early years of college, so it left some wonderful memories and while many have dissipated over time I do remember replaying these games multiple times for better upgrades or missing bolts. But while I did enjoy these games this time around, I will admit they do show their age a bit.
A quick run down of the trilogy.
"Ratchet & Clank"
- Platforming has aged the worst in this game. It was testing on the patience.
- The arsenal of weapons was the weakest of the three with only a few stand outs like the RYNO, Tesla gun, Suck Cannon and the Sheepinator.
- Hoverboard section wasn't quite as fun as I remembered
- Hands down the BEST SOUNDTRACK of the three.
"Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando"
- The platforming was improved upon and the grind rails were far more fun in this sequel.
- Hover bike sections were great.
- Introduced the fantastic arena battles
- BEST arsenal of the trilogy
- The giant Clank robot fights weren't as fun this time around
"Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal"
- Quark vid comics, they were fine.
- Crystal collecting in the sewers was awful.
- Great arsenal
- BEST upgrade system of the trilogy.
- Cut down giant clank fights to 1 was nice.
- Lack of grind rails was really disappointing.
- Arena battles weren't quite as good in this sequel.
- None of the Control layouts on the Vita ever felt great.
Ranking the series: 2, 3, 1
The "Ratchet & Clank Trilogy" is a lot of fun and has proven to me that these games, although a bit aged, still play really well for the most part.
I wanted to re-visit these games almost a decade ago and it took me quite some time to finally get the chance to play them again and I'm glad I did. It really did transport me back to my teen years playing in my comfortable room in my parents house with the sound up.
I played through both 1 & 2 twice for better upgrades but haven't yet done so for the 3rd, although I may still do that.
All in all this was a great revisit but I don't think I need to come back to these again. Time to stop looking back and time to start looking forward to newer Ratchet adventures.
