3.5/5 ★ – Diluted_Thought's review of Turok.

I never understood why the covers in this era of games had these partial silhouettes. Seriously, why? Anyway, I'm a Turok fan, and a believer in the franchise and have been since the N64. Over the years they've tried to do something different and this game was made with a mix of what fans loved (dinosaurs, tech bow, jungles, giants creatures and a cool arsenal) while adding some new elements (melee kills, dodging, a large cast, a dinosaur planet), all which provided an new interesting take on the series. Like most Turok games there were many people who keep shitting on this game as well and quite honestly, I'm not too sure why since it was a pretty bad ass FPS. I was able to get around some of the changes to the character and story and chock it up to a new vision for the franchise. But what I couldn't get over was this games arsenal. Earlier Turok games were known for the insane weaponry you can find thought the levels. There were a ton of creative ideas like The Fusion Cannon (Turok: DH), The Scorpion Launcher, Razor Wind and Cerebral Bore (Turok 2), The Dark Matter Cube, Spider Mines and Gravity Disruptor (Turok Evolution), and even with all these rad ideas the best we got from Turok 08 was the Sticky Bomb gun while the rest of your weapons were "futuristic" updates to your pistol, shotgun and rifles which all felt very forgettable. Even the Plasma Rifle, which was ok, was a little hard to control and needed to cool down after long bursts. Bogus. This left the compound bow for some cool stealth kills and or quick explosions and the knife which always had a very brutal kill sequence (if your button timing was right). The game was enjoyable but also suffered from some ridiculous difficulty at times. In fact this game was ripe for some amazing stealth gameplay but stealth didn't work unless a particular sequence required it. I was caught most of the time despite how quite I was. That was a total let down. Still, the game looked amazing and it also gave us a final boss fight with a massive T-Rex which we haven't got since the original game. I think this game was too main stream and the studio definitely played it too safe. Still I've run through this game multiple times over the years despite its flaws and failures. Really was hoping for the sequel to come through with some cool new guns but unfortunately that project was cancelled after this game failed to perform.
