3.5/5 ★ – Diluted_Thought's review of Wipeout 2048.
The whole concept of this game is based on speed (obviously) and so there are more than a few other games I can compare it to but I'll start by saying that I enjoyed this game the more I played it and understood the controls for it.
Visually this is probably one of the best looking games on the PSvita. Where "Gravity Rush" was able to show the systems capabilities "Wipeout 2048" was really able to show its true potential with graphics and fidelity that you probably wouldn't have seen on the PS2. I was surprised at how detailed the levels were are how fast this game actually ran. The EDM soundtrack was also a great way to feel the speed pulsing in your ears. There where also plenty of unlockable vehicles to find and while I may night be back to get them all, the ones I did get made the game plenty fun to play. There's also a stage in this game that took me back to the days of "Jet Moto" and its Nightmare level. You can drop right out of the race to your doom, only you do respawn at the your last drop point (which sucks because it puts you all the way to the back) and sometimes catching back up is a pain so normally I would have to restart the level. They also had special levels that have a Neon aesthetic that were also a cool addition as the level made your vehicle go faster and faster until you weren't able to control it and had you running into walls until you explode. None of the races or challenges ever felt like they took too long to complete which really helped during replays. Lastly, if a level was to hard to complete the game allows you to skip and let you come back to it if you'd like, so I never felt stuck anywhere which was wonderful
This game does come with some hurdles tho.
The controls, while good, are still very difficult to master and while you do have different vehicles with varied stats it almost feels impossible not to run into walls during very speedy moments. The loading in this game take FOREVER. While I understand it has to load up these detailed stages it really drags down the momentum it worked so hard to achieve with its gameplay. Stages have weapons that can be used during certain races which were mostly dope, but if you run into one, specifically the "bomb", it produces an ear pierceing noise that really wasn't necessary and made it hard to enjoy the games sound track and sound design.
I was debating on weather to give this a full 4 stars but there was just one to many things that got in the way for that. Still "Wipeout 2048" is a great game and I had a lot of fun unlocking new challenges, races and hover crafts during my time with it and I would definitely recommend this title.
