4/5 ★ – Dima064's review of Minecraft: Java Edition.
Completed as of writing this review: Base Game with QoL mods
The most legendary sandbox of all time! It is impressive how it still is not being forgotten through all these years, thanks to modders, Youtubers and the developers themselves. The initial premise is kind of interesting. It's like a real world but with it's own spin and magic. You can craft anything you want, you can go anywhere you want and basically do anything you want. And for it's time this is kind of revolutionary. It has shown that graphics and detailed environment don't matter all the time in gaming. Yes, this is generated in it's own right by it's own rules, but usually games strive to look as immersive as possible. Minecraft does it in it's own way. And that's why this is a legendary game.
As for my opinion though, I understood that this game is not my cup of tea. The thing is that I prefer linearity more. This is the exact opposite. Yes, the main point is to kill the Ender Dragon... but the main route is so lame to be honest. It's more of luck-based when we consider the procedurally generated world, which, I know, sounds dumb, but it's true to an extent. And the game is supposed to be played blind without hints mostly (not anymore but initially) but even when you know what to do, the pacing of gathering materials is basically random. That's why I think this is not for me. And to add insult to injury, my world became cursed, with blocks near me randomly collapsing. That is a rare case as I googled, as if the game doesn't want me here, lol.
With all that out of the way, I can see why this game is beloved by millions but it's also okay to admit that this is not for everyone. I still think this game is clever technically. Of course, the development was all done in a live service style basically but if we're only counting the main route of beating the game, I think this is unique. Hopefully this is the only game of genre that I will review as my views are very different from the fans of the genre. Try it if you can, see if it clicks for you or not, not a bad game in any way.
