3/5 ★ – Dima064's review of The Incredibles.
Completed as of writing this review: Base Game w/ some optional things
Finally I was able to beat this game after so many years because I was stuck a lot in childhood. Watching the reviews that said this game was mediocre at best I’d say they were pretty justified. However to me this game is more like a guilty pleasure. Generally it’s a reskin of SpongeBob: Battle For Bikini Bottom, by engine and even gameplay. With this I can safely say that I’m not a fan of this game’s graphics. It looks dull and even ugly in some places. The animations are not bad though. The stages though can drag a A LOT… some of them at least. And the bosses is the worst aspect of this game. The hitbox of the main characters is awful in terms of how there are no invicibility frames.
There are 5 gameplay styles and only 2 of them are good: Bob and Helen. Dash is pretty janky (especially when you speed up) and Violet’s stealth stage was just awful and pretty much was the reason I didn’t beat this game in my childhood. Their ball stage was fine but also janky as well. There were also bugs, one of which made me stuck by a long time on the PC version, because in nowhere it’s specified that you had to hold TAB to get up on the last elevator in Bob’s stage, which was dumb as hell. Also I can understand that at the time using movie’s cutscenes to show progression of the adaption was ok but to me it seems kinda lazy. They also didn’t show the main twist of the movie that revealed Syndrome to be the main villian. I imagine those who haven’t seen a movie would probably be confused by pacing. Worth a mention, the game’s audio (on the PS2 at least) was too low-quality and sound-mixing as well. And hearing each character say one-line every single time something happens got annoying.
You can clearly say this game was rushed to hell. But the majority of it was pretty fine for me. I don’t think this game deserves a higher rating though because of the aforementioned issues. Should you play it? Probably not, it’s pretty outdated by today’s standards.
