2/5 ★ – DropsAStitch's review of Yoshi's Island DS.

Beaten January 23, 2022 Played on 3DS Unknown hours played This game has taken me the past 15 or so years to finish. I eagerly bought it upon release due to my toddler self’s love for the original. It did not meet my expectations. Pros: Yoshi’s the protagonist. This doesn’t happen enough. Some levels (not many) were fun. Some clever puzzle designs. Cons: Frustrating and monotonous platforming. I often don’t like platformers though, so I may not be the best judge. Some levels were just plain bad. I didn’t like the switching babies mechanic. Not as innovative as it could have been, and I didn’t like how you had to go through the entire roulette of babies to get the one you needed. Some controls could have been better thought out. Like how you can accidentally ground pound off the cliff quite easily and you cannot begin running without Yoshi sticking his tongue out first. The story is nonexistent. I understand they were trying to stick to the original, but here, I think they could have deviated more (rather than doing so with the baby mechanic.) The dialogue was very uncreative and cheesy, even by Mario standards. Overall, this was a disappointment for me, especially due to how magical the first one was when I was young. Perhaps nostalgia and me not being very good at platformers got in the way? Not sure, but I can’t give it more than 2 stars due to how unenjoyable it was.
