4.5/5 ★ – Eclipse's review of Valkyria Chronicles 4.
This game is a must-play for fans of tactics games and especially for those that have played other entries in the series. I played this immediately after finishing Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, and this game retains a lot of the same charm and feel of the original while improving upon it in many ways. The combat is distinct, with tactics, third-person shooter aspects, and RPG elements. My only complaints about the gameplay are that the enemy AI can be pretty bad at times, and the ranking system used to determine how well you did in battles is flawed. Your rank is entirely dependent on how many turns you take to clear a map, which can incentivize cheesing maps to complete them as fast as possible. This wouldn't be a problem if the experience and money gained from the battle wasn't tied to the rank you receive, which unfortunately it is. My suggestion would be to ignore ranks and play the maps at your own pace, as you can make up for lost exp and money with skirmish battles that can be repeated. All complaints aside, it is incredibly satisfying to enter a battle with a plan of attack and pull it off without a hitch. The story is entertaining and carried by a cast of likable characters that I felt very invested in by the end. The art direction and graphics are great as well, and just like the original game, I feel that this one will age well when it comes to its visuals. Overall I think the game is definitely worth checking out, and I hope that more sequels are made and receive western releases.
