5/5 ★ – ElementaryGaming's review of Super Mario Odyssey.

An amazing game with perfect all-ages appeal. A kid can just play through the main story, and an adult can collect all of the moons for a challenge. It's focused on exploration and discovery. It gives you a ton of big environments with a bunch of cool abilities and lets you just try out fun things. It just feels so good to play. Every level is full of artistic detail and creativity. The gameplay stays fresh thanks to varied environments and controlling new enemies during each level. The length of each world is perfect. You spend a few hours in each, which is enough time to fully take in the environment, without overstaying its welcome. Buying new memorabilia for your ship as decoration was such a nice touch. I have a few critiques, most of which are nitpicks. First is the VOLLEYBALL MINIGAME. Unbelievably difficult. I spent 3 hours' worth of pain to get this moon. Also, searching for the last few purple coins in each world is never fun, as they can be hard to find. I also found some hint art moons are too obscure. The levels are huge, how am I supposed to find a moon based on one obscure picture? Finally, a portion of the final level felt cheap- where there's an onslaught of enemies and your attack ability is limited. But this didn't hurt my love of the game overall. Ultimately, Mario Odyssey rivals Galaxy in quality, which is not something I thought another 3D Mario would ever do. Besides those few moons that are true pain to get, the vast majority of the game is one of the most memorable 3D platformers ever. It consistently surprises with its worlds, and offers a huge adventure to lose yourself in.
